Grants for local officials with disabilities
If enacted, the bill would create a Labor Department grant program to help local governments pay for accommodations so elected or appointed local officials with disabilities can do official work. The program would be authorized $5 million per year for fiscal years 2027 through 2033. Grants would be $3,000 to $50,000 per year, last the official's first term plus two years, and be awarded first-come, first-served until yearly funds are exhausted. Recipients would have to provide a non-Federal match equal to at least 25% each year, deposit that match into a special reasonable accommodations funding account, and keep that account funded for at least four years after the grant ends. The Secretary could reserve up to 1% of annual funds for administration.
Program rules, definitions, and reports
If enacted, the Secretary would send an annual report to Congress showing applications, entities funded, communities served, job types, and types of accommodations paid for. Beginning in year three, reports would also include totals in reasonable accommodations funding accounts and basic demographic data on supported officials. The bill would define key program terms, including "local elected official," "local appointed official," "local government," and "rural," and it would reference ADA and Assistive Technology Act definitions. These definitions and reports would guide who can apply and how the program is tracked.
