Gas Money Saved Act

Sponsored By: Representative Titus, Dina [D-NV-1]

Introduced

Summary

This bill would create a trigger to reopen federal fuel-economy standards if gasoline prices rise far faster than inflation. It ties that trigger to Bureau of Labor Statistics price data and raises small civil penalties for certain violations.

Show full summary
  • Vehicle makers and fleets: When national average gasoline prices rise at least five times faster than overall inflation over any 180-day or longer period, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration must start a review to determine whether current Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards are still the maximum feasible fuel economy.
  • Regulators: The NHTSA Administrator must use Bureau of Labor Statistics data to detect the trigger and begin the reevaluation. The applicable review period begins after enactment and resets after each adjustment.
  • Penalties and enforcement: The bill amends 49 U.S.C. § 32912 to set specific civil penalties at $25 in subsection (b) and $50 in subsection (c)(1)(B).
