Pet grants for eligible veterans

If enacted, the bill would require the VA Secretary to set up a competitive pilot grant program. Nonprofit groups would get grants to provide dogs or cats to veterans. Grantees would give the pet and initial supplies, including at least one month of food, a collar, leash, bedding, and other needed items. Grants would pay to spay or neuter the pet and cover initial medications and vaccinations and any additional periods the Secretary decides. Eligible nonprofits would need to show they treat pets humanely and work with one or more veteran service organizations. The program would have $1,000,000 authorized for fiscal years 2027 through 2028. The authority to award grants would end after fiscal year 2028. After the pilot ends, the VA Secretary would report findings and recommendations to the House and Senate Veterans' Affairs Committees.
