Show full summary
- Families and consumers would get on-device and online estimates of performance life with and without routine maintenance, the estimated annual cost of routine maintenance, which features need Wi‑Fi or updates, and how long updates will be provided. Consumers could report when an appliance reaches end of performance life and see aggregated reports by manufacturer and model on NIST's website.
- Manufacturers and retailers would have to affix labels for appliances placed on a NIST list and publish the same disclosures online. Labels would not apply to resale or secondhand sales and would begin for retail sales 5 years after an appliance is listed.
- Federal agencies would get new duties and enforcement tools. The Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology would set the appliance list and normal operating conditions and establish a consumer reporting mechanism within 1 year of enactment. The Federal Trade Commission could enforce violations using its unfair or deceptive acts authority and seek penalties under the FTC Act.
