Show full summary
  • Prospective diversity applicants: People who would have applied for diversity visas lose that immigration pathway. This removes a visa option that targeted entrants from countries with low rates of recent immigration to the United States.
  • U.S. immigration law text: The bill strikes subsection (c) of 8 U.S.C. 1153 and adjusts multiple cross-references in Title II of the Immigration and Nationality Act to remove DV-specific language and prevent inconsistent references.
  • Federal operations and funding: The change is limited to statute text and conforming edits. The bill does not create new appropriations or tax changes and does not add programs or funding mechanisms.

End the diversity visa program

This bill would end the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program by striking subsection (c) of section 203 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1153). If enacted, no new diversity immigrant visas could be issued and people who planned to use that visa route would lose that option. The bill would also make technical changes across Title II of the INA to remove references to subsection (c) and realign cross-references. The change would take effect upon enactment.
