No Bets on Wildfires Act

Sponsored By: Representative Whitesides, George [D-CA-27]

Introduced

Summary

Would ban listing or clearing of any wildfire-related event contract by registered entities under the Commodity Exchange Act. This bill would add a new subsection to section 5c that forbids a registered entity from listing for trading or accepting for clearing any agreement, contract, transaction, or swap that involves a wildfire. The prohibition covers wildfires "caused by whatever means" and applies regardless of a contract's structure, purpose, or whether it references or settles on a wildfire's occurrence or impact. The text includes no exemptions, phase-in, or new penalties, so enforcement would rely on existing Commodity Exchange Act authorities and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
