Study for African Burial Ground Museum
If enacted, Interior would study creating an African Burial Ground museum at the National Monument in New York City. The study would review sites (including 22 Reade Street), available collections (including DNA research samples), and partnerships with museums, HBCUs, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. It would estimate costs to buy property and to build, operate, and maintain the museum, and assess who could manage it. The Secretary would consult state and local preservation, history, and tourism offices and other groups, and gauge public and financial support. If funds are provided, a report to Congress would be due within 3 years of that funding.
