Uranium for Energy Independence Act of 2025

Sponsored By: Representative McGuire, John J. [R-VA-5]

Introduced

Summary

Treat uranium as a critical mineral for federal policy. This bill would deem uranium to have been included on the 2022 final list of critical minerals and would require its inclusion on every future critical minerals list issued under the Energy Act of 2020. It removes the fuel-mineral exclusion for uranium so federal programs, regulations, and policy that rely on the critical minerals list would treat uranium the same as other listed minerals. The result is consistent federal recognition of uranium in supply and security planning.

Uranium named a critical mineral

This bill would treat uranium as a critical mineral for federal policy. It would deem uranium to have been on the U.S. Geological Survey’s 2022 list (published February 24, 2022) and keep it on all future lists under the Energy Act. Even though fuel minerals are usually excluded, uranium would still count. Federal programs that use the critical-mineral list could treat uranium as covered, which could help miners and processors qualify for support. If enacted, this would take effect upon enactment.
