Expanding Student Access to Mental Health Services Act
Sponsored By: Representative Allen, Rick W. [R-GA-12]
Introduced
Summary
Expanded school-based mental health services would broaden what schools could fund under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The bill would let districts use program money for mental health first aid, emergency planning and response teams, agreements with local mental health agencies, and telehealth. It would also require local educational agencies to explain in grant applications how funds will support mental health services and authorize technology spending specifically for those services.

More school mental health help for kids
If enacted, schools could use federal education grants to expand student mental health services. Funds could cover mental health first aid, school emergency planning and response teams, agreements with local health agencies, and telehealth. Districts would need to say in their applications if money would support mental health services. The bill would also let schools buy technology to improve these services and would lift a current infrastructure limit when that tech also supports mental health. These changes would take effect upon enactment.
