James Earl Jones Congressional Gold Medal Act

Sponsored By: Representative Lawler, Michael [R-NY-17]

Introduced

Summary

Awards a posthumous Congressional Gold Medal to James Earl Jones. This bill would direct the Speaker of the House and the President pro tempore of the Senate to arrange the presentation and authorize the Secretary of the Treasury to strike a gold medal bearing Jones's image and name. After the presentation the gold medal would be given to his son, Flynn Earl Jones. The Secretary could also strike and sell bronze duplicates at prices that cover production costs. Medals would be treated as national numismatic items and paid for through the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund, with proceeds from bronze sales returned to that fund.

Mint could sell bronze copies to collectors

If enacted, the U.S. Mint would be allowed to make bronze copies of the James Earl Jones Congressional Gold Medal and sell them. Prices would need to cover costs like labor, materials, dies, and machinery. Sales money would go into the Mint Public Enterprise Fund, which could also pay the Mint’s costs to make the medals. The medals would be treated as national medals and as numismatic items under federal law, mainly affecting Mint operations and collectors.
