Study and guidance on emergency-room fentanyl testing
This bill would require Health and Human Services to study fentanyl testing in hospital emergency departments. The study would finish within 1 year after enactment. It would review how often overdose patients are tested for fentanyl, costs, benefits and risks, and effects on privacy and the patient–doctor relationship. Within 6 months after the study ends, HHS would issue guidance. The guidance would address whether emergency departments should make fentanyl testing routine for overdose patients. It would also tell hospitals how to ensure clinicians know which drugs standard tests include. It would address how fentanyl testing would affect later overdose risk and health outcomes. This would not require hospitals to change testing now or set new patient costs.
