Lulu’s Law

In Committee

Summary

Designate shark attacks as an event eligible for Wireless Emergency Alerts. This bill would require the Federal Communications Commission to issue an order within 180 days after enactment to add shark attacks to the existing definition of an Alert Message in current FCC rules. It anchors that definition to 47 C.F.R. 10.10(a) or any successor regulation. The bill contains no new funding, penalties, or other program elements and simply expands the set of events that can trigger Wireless Emergency Alerts.

Wireless alerts for shark attacks

If enacted, the FCC would have 180 days to issue an order. The order would designate "shark attack" as an event eligible for Wireless Emergency Alerts. The bill would define "Alert Message" by reference to 47 C.F.R. §10.10(a) or any successor rule. That would let officials send alert messages to mobile phones about shark attacks, mainly affecting people in at-risk coastal or recreational areas and local public-safety authorities.
