No U.S. recognition of Ivanishvili-led Georgia
This bill would set a U.S. policy to not recognize any Georgian government led by Bidzina Ivanishvili or his proxies. Federal officials could not take steps or use federal funds to imply recognition of those leaders. It would require full use of primary and secondary sanctions under Executive Order 14024. It would also allow use of Global Magnitsky and EO 14024 tools against corruption and foreign influence tied to China, Iran, or Russia. For U.S. purposes, the incumbent Georgian president before October 26, 2024 would be the only legitimate leader. The President could end this policy only after free and fair elections are certified by the U.S. Helsinki Commission chair and co-chair.
