SAFETY Act of 2025

Sponsored By: Representative Johnson, Dusty [R-SD-At Large]

Introduced

Summary

Protecting U.S. common names for food, wine, and beer in foreign markets is the bill's main goal. It would define what counts as a "common name" and require trade efforts to preserve those names abroad.

Show full summary
  • Farmers and food exporters would get clearer legal footing on product names. The bill lists many food examples such as Parmesan, Feta, Prosciutto, Salami, and other cheeses and cured meats to show which terms are treated as common names.
  • Winemakers and brewers would see specific protections for varietal wine terms, Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved grape designations, and many beer style names. The bill clarifies that some wine descriptors are nongeographic common names.
  • Federal trade and agriculture officials would be required to pursue bilateral, plurilateral, or multilateral agreements to secure use of these names and to provide semiannual briefings to four specified congressional committees on progress.
