Emergency relief grants for farm workers
If enacted, USDA would give grants to farm worker groups in FY 2026 and later when the Secretary finds a covered disaster. The grants, run through USDA Rural Development, could fund cash aid, shelter, emergency services, and community rebuilding and preparedness. Funds would stay available until spent. USDA would consult with farm worker groups and run a promotional plan before and during grant distribution.
Who qualifies for farm worker disaster aid
If enacted, a covered disaster would include events like droughts, wildfires, floods, extreme heat, winter storms, or a pandemic, and other events that make farm workers lose income or be unable to work. Grants would only flow during periods the Secretary determines a covered disaster exists. Eligible grantees would be farm worker membership groups or 501(c)(3) charities with experience helping farm workers. A migrant or seasonal farm worker would mean someone who worked farm jobs for any 12 straight months in the last 24 months and got at least half their income or half their work time from farm work. These rules decide which groups can receive grants and which workers can get help.
