Recognition and federal services for Grand River Bands
This bill would affirm federal recognition of the Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians. Federal Indian laws would apply, and prior rights or claims would not be cut back unless this Act says so. Enrolled members would be eligible for all federal tribal services, regardless of a reservation or where they live. Services could be delivered in Newaygo, Oceana, Kent, Muskegon, and Ottawa Counties in Michigan. The tribe would have 18 months to submit and maintain a membership roll, using its own enrollment rules.
Trust land and reservation for Grand River Bands
Interior would take land into trust for the tribe in Muskegon, Newaygo, and Oceana Counties. It could also take tribal fee land in Kent and Ottawa Counties into trust. Any land taken into trust could become part of the reservation if the tribe asks. The land must have no liens, mortgages, or taxes owed when accepted. Interior would have 18 months to issue a final decision after a request to take land into trust.
