Show full summary
  • Families: Military families and domestic partners can qualify for FMLA leave under broader definitions. This change treats domestic partners the same as spouses for leave purposes.
  • Servicemembers: The bill recharacterizes leave rights and widens the set of individuals connected to a servicemember who can trigger leave.
  • Federal civilian employees: Title II applies the expanded FMLA definitions and leave protections to federal workers, giving them access to the same leave rights as covered private-sector beneficiaries.

Foreseeable leave would need reasonable notice, and medical certification rules would apply. These changes would take effect upon enactment.

More FMLA leave for servicemembers and families

All standard FMLA, servicemember family, and veteran leave together could not exceed 26 workweeks in any 12-month period. These changes would take effect upon enactment.
