Strengthening US-Caribbean Partnership Act

Sponsored By: Representative Castro, Joaquin [D-TX-20]

Introduced

Summary

Authorizes the President to extend diplomatic privileges and immunities under the International Organizations Immunities Act to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The bill would add a new section to the IOIA that allows the executive branch to apply the same terms and conditions to CARICOM as it does for other public international organizations in which the United States participates. This creates a legal pathway for CARICOM to receive IOIA-style immunities when the President makes a determination to extend them.

Allow diplomatic immunities for Caribbean Community

This bill would let the President extend U.S. diplomatic privileges and legal immunities to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Any extension would be under terms the President sets and in the same way used for other international organizations. The bill would not grant these protections automatically; a later presidential decision would be needed. If enacted, this could help CARICOM operate in the U.S., with little direct effect on most households.
