National study of extreme heat costs
If enacted, the government would order a national study on the money costs of extreme heat. NOAA’s climate office would total deaths and illnesses, medical bills, property losses, and insurance and workers’ comp claims. It would also examine lost work, business outages from brownouts, infrastructure damage, higher cooling bills, and farm and livestock losses. The agency would seek input from many federal and non-federal partners, may hire an outside group, and must post results on HEAT.gov within 4 years. The bill would authorize $3.5 million for the study and ask for a plan to track these costs and improve heat-death reporting and labor loss measures.
