Housing block grants denied to sanctuary cities
If enacted, states and localities labeled sanctuary jurisdictions would lose eligibility for Community Development Block Grants. A place would count as a sanctuary if it blocks sharing immigration-status information or refuses DHS detainer or release-notice requests under federal law. There is an exception: a place would not count as a sanctuary solely for protecting victims or witnesses who come forward. Grant applicants would need to certify they are not, and will not become, a sanctuary during the grant period. This would take effect upon enactment and could mean fewer or delayed housing and neighborhood projects in affected areas.
