Sponsored By: Representative Fitzgerald, Scott [R-WI-5]
Introduced
Summary
Expanding lending flexibility for federal credit unions. This bill would let federally chartered credit unions make loans with maturities up to 20 years or longer as the National Credit Union Administration Board permits and would remove a rule that required one such loan be a member's principal residence. It would also state that the National Credit Union Administration must prioritize safety and soundness.

Longer federal credit union loans
If enacted, the bill would let federally chartered credit unions offer longer loan terms. It would raise the statutory maximum loan term from 15 years to 20 years. The NCUA Board could allow terms longer than 20 years by regulation. It would remove the rule that the dwelling must be the borrower's principal residence for that loan category. If enacted, borrowers would likely have lower monthly payments but would pay more total interest over the loan life. These changes would apply only to federally chartered credit unions and would take effect upon enactment.
