119-hr-4463119th Congress

To amend the Catawba Indian Tribe of South Carolina Land Claims Settlement Act of 1993.

Sponsored By: Representative Norman, Ralph [R-SC-5]

Passed House

Summary

Removes the lineal-descent and political-relation requirement for future enrollment in the Catawba Indian Tribe of South Carolina. The bill would strike the sentence in section 7(d) of the Catawba Indian Tribe of South Carolina Land Claims Settlement Act of 1993 that limited membership to lineal descendants on the final base membership roll who maintained political relations with the Tribe. It does not set new enrollment criteria, add funding, or change the rest of the 1993 Act.

Easier membership in Catawba Tribe

If enacted, federal law would remove one Catawba enrollment rule. Applicants would not need to be lineal descendants on the final base roll. Applicants would also not need to have kept political ties with the Tribe. This only affects future Catawba membership decisions. The bill adds no new criteria, dates, or money.
