Defense study on military gun sourcing
If enacted, the Secretary of Defense would study where small arms, light weapons, and parts used by U.S. troops are made. The study would cover weapons made outside the U.S. and those made here by subsidiaries of foreign-owned companies, as determined by the Secretary. Within 180 days after enactment, the Secretary would report to Congress and the President with buying recommendations favoring weapons wholly made in the U.S. by U.S.-owned and controlled entities. It would use an existing federal definition of "small arms and light weapons." If followed, these recommendations could shift future Defense purchases toward U.S. manufacturers.
