WWII Nurses Congressional Gold Medal Act

Sponsored By: Representative Stefanik, Elise M. [R-NY-21]

Introduced

Summary

Recognizes World War II Army and Navy nurses by awarding them a Congressional Gold Medal. The bill would have the Speaker of the House and the President pro tempore arrange the award and authorize the Secretary of the Treasury to strike the medal with emblems and inscriptions the Secretary chooses. The medal would be given to the Smithsonian Institution for display and research, and the Smithsonian is urged to make it available at places tied to the Army and Navy Nurse Corps of World War II, including the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence, the Women in Military Service for America Memorial, the U.S. Army Women’s Museum, National Naval Medical Centers, and the National World War II Museum. The Secretary may strike and sell bronze duplicates at prices that cover the costs of production. The U.S. Mint Public Enterprise Fund may pay the striking costs and proceeds from sales would be returned to that fund.

Buy bronze copies of WWII nurse medal

This bill would let the Treasury mint and sell bronze copies of the WWII nurses' medal. Collectors and the public could buy them. The Mint would set prices to cover labor, materials, dies, machine use, and overhead. The Mint could use its Public Enterprise Fund to pay costs, and sales money would go back into that fund. The bill would also classify these as national medals and numismatic items, guiding how the Mint manages and accounts for them.
