No one must register to vote
If enacted, getting the voter statement would not force you to register. You would not have to fill out a voter registration form just because you received it.
Standard voter info for renters and mortgage applicants
If enacted, the consumer finance bureau would create a short, uniform statement on how to register to vote and your voting rights. The bureau would test it with consumers and consult the Election Assistance Commission. It would be available in English and the 10 most common languages for people with limited English, based on Census data, and posted online in one place. Federal agencies could issue rules to carry this plan out.
Voter info with leases and mortgages
If enacted, landlords and housing agencies in federal rental programs would have to give you the voter statement at lease signing and when they give income verification forms. Housing Choice Voucher agencies would also give it when a voucher is issued. Owners in properties with federally backed multifamily loans would give it at lease signing if required by the overseeing federal agency. Mortgage lenders would have to give applicants the statement in writing within 5 business days after you apply.
