AIRFARE Act
Sponsored By: Representative Steube, W. Gregory [R-FL-17]
In Committee
Summary
Expedite gate access for caregivers and guardians accompanying minors and passengers needing assistance. The AIRFARE Act would require TSA to set up a system within 180 days at domestic airports so airlines can issue up to two gate passes and link those passes to existing TSA PreCheck Known Traveler Numbers on tickets.
Show full summary
- Families and parents: Parents and guardians could receive up to two gate passes to accompany a minor to the departing gate, making boarding and gate-side handoffs smoother.
- Caregivers for passengers needing assistance: Caregivers accompanying passengers who need health or mobility support could be issued gate passes, and a pass for a wheelchair user is allowed only if the caregiver is the person pushing the wheelchair.
- Airports, airlines, and TSA: TSA would administer an administrative system at domestic airports and airlines would record gate-pass status on tickets the same way they mark PreCheck, aiming to reduce duplicate screening for accompanying caregivers.

Faster gate passes for caregivers
If enacted, air carriers would be able to offer up to two gate passes to caregivers, parents, and guardians who accompany a minor or a passenger needing assistance to a departing domestic flight. TSA would have to set up a system at domestic airports within 180 days to speed gate passes and flight access procedures. If you have TSA Pre-Check and a Known Traveler Number, the gate pass would show Pre-Check on the ticket in the same way the ticket holder's status is shown. For a passenger who uses a wheelchair, a gate pass would be issued only to the caregiver who is actually pushing the wheelchair.
