Sponsored By: Representative Vindman, Eugene Simon [D-VA-7]

In Committee

Summary

This bill would expand the Federal Meat Inspection Act's private-use exemption to let animal owners slaughter, prepare, and transport meat for private household use. It would limit that exemption to meat used exclusively by an owner, their household, nonpaying guests, or employees, and it would add rules for agent involvement.

More home slaughter rights for owners

If enacted, this bill would let a person who owns an animal, even a partial owner, slaughter it for their household. It would also let owners prepare or transport the meat only for the owner, the owner's household, nonpaying guests, or employees. If an owner hires an agent to help, the owner would have to keep custody and specific identification of the carcass or meat. The Agriculture Secretary would set the exact custody and identification rules.
