Sponsored By: Representative Sykes, Emilia Strong [D-OH-13]

Introduced

Summary

No-fee early lease termination for survivors of domestic violence. This bill would let applicants and tenants in housing covered by the Violence Against Women Act end leases early if they are victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Landlords and housing providers for those covered programs may not charge an early-termination fee to tenants or applicants who leave for those safety reasons.

Early lease exit with no fees for survivors

If enacted, renters in federally assisted housing covered by the Violence Against Women Act could end a lease early if they are victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking. Landlords could not charge an early-termination fee, even if the lease says otherwise. This would apply to both applicants and current tenants in these covered housing programs. It would create a no-cost way to leave unsafe housing.
