Veterans: new fraud checks and protections
If enacted, the VA would set up ways to find and report suspected fraud in disability claim forms. The VA would require claims staff to identify and report suspected fraud to investigators, including the Office of Inspector General. The VA would run regular audits of disability forms sent to the Department. The VA would tell the person who sent a form or claim if it suspected fraud. The VA Inspector General would be allowed to use extra federal investigatory powers for these fraud cases. The VA generally would not be able to reopen a final benefits decision solely because of an IG probe. That rule would not apply if the IG investigation led to a criminal conviction for fraud.
