New tax credit for food donations

This bill would let you claim a nonrefundable tax credit for cash or wholesome food you donate to eligible food charities. The credit would equal your qualified donations to 501(c)(3) food banks, soup kitchens, and similar groups; non-operating private foundations would not qualify. If you deliver donated food, you could also count vehicle costs up to the IRS charitable mileage rate. You could not also take a deduction or another credit for the same donation, and you would need written proof of the gifts. Any unused credit could carry forward for up to five years. Donations made through your business would count as a general business credit; the rest would be a personal credit. These rules would apply to tax years starting after December 31, 2025.
