Bill Overview
Analyzed Economic Effects
3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.
Student loan relief for federal workers in shutdowns
If enacted, federal employees with federal student loans would get protections during a funding lapse. During a covered shutdown, you would not be charged late fees, penalties, or extra interest for missed payments. Negative credit reporting for those delayed or missed payments would be blocked. These rules would apply only to Higher Education Act loans and only when your pay is disrupted by a lapse in funding. Protections would apply to disruptions on or after October 1, 2025.
Quick rules and credit report cleanup
If enacted, the Education Department would have 30 days to issue rules with OPM, the courts, the House, and the Senate. Loan servicers and credit bureaus would have to cooperate. They would stop sending negative credit marks for covered missed payments and remove any that were wrongly sent.
Protections do not cancel student loans
This bill would not forgive or cancel your student loan. You would still owe the full amount and must repay, even with the temporary protections.
