More detention for immigrants who assault officers

This bill would let the Department of Homeland Security detain some noncitizens accused of assaulting law enforcement. It would apply if a noncitizen is already inadmissible under certain immigration rules. It would also apply when the person is charged, arrested, convicted, or admits to acts that meet the elements of an assault on a law enforcement officer. The bill would treat "assault" the same way the local law does. "Law enforcement officer" would include investigators, arresting officers, prosecutors, jailers, firefighters, and other first responders. The Secretary would have to issue a detainer and, if no federal, state, or local officials hold the person, take custody quickly.
