Show full summary
- Veterans: Veterans could have better public transit access to VA medical care when local services that stop at VA facilities become eligible for federal operating aid.
- Transit agencies: Transit agencies in urbanized areas with fewer than 200,000 people or that serve a VA medical facility would be eligible for 5307 operating assistance. Recipients must certify within 30 days of first receiving funds and every year after that that the money will support service to a VA medical facility.
- Federal oversight: The Secretary of Transportation would review those certifications and may suspend 5307 operating funds for any recipient that fails to provide the certified VA service during a fiscal year.

More transit aid and rules for veterans' hospital routes
If enacted, more transit systems could use federal grants for daily operating costs. Systems in urban areas under 200,000 people, as counted by the Census, would qualify. Routes that serve a Department of Veterans Affairs medical center would also qualify. Providers using money for those VA-serving routes would need to certify within 30 days of first getting funds, and each year after, that the money supports that service. If they fail to run the service they certified during a year, the Secretary of Transportation would suspend those operating payments. This could help veterans reach medical care, while adding compliance steps for transit agencies.
