Loan guarantees for rural sawmills

If enacted, the bill would create a Timber Production Expansion Guaranteed Loan Program at the Department of Agriculture. The program would offer up to $220,000,000 in loan guarantees to eligible owners or operators of sawmills or wood-processing facilities in rural areas. To qualify, a facility would need to be within 250 miles of Federal land that the Agriculture and Interior Secretaries identify as high or very high priority for ecological restoration involving vegetation removal. The Secretary would only guarantee loans when the facility’s presence would substantially lower the cost of vegetation-removal restoration projects, and must identify priority Federal land within 1 year and at least every 5 years after that.
