Show full summary
  • Graduate and professional borrowers: Would effect statutory changes that restore loan-limit language for master's, doctoral, and professional students and change the annual and aggregate caps available through the Direct Loan program.
  • Statutory clarity and administration: Reorganizes and simplifies the loan-limit rules by removing a specific subparagraph, striking transitional time-bound phrases, and renumbering paragraphs to reduce confusing cross-references.
  • Program scope preserved: The bill does not add new funding, tax changes, or new eligibility rules. It focuses on amending the text that governs loan limits for graduate and professional students.

Changes to graduate student loan limits

This bill would change how annual and aggregate Direct Loan limits apply to graduate and professional students. It would insert the phrase ", for any period of instruction beginning on or after July 1, 2012," before clause (i), remove similar date language from clauses (i) and (ii) (including the phrase covering July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2026), and repeal subparagraph (C). It would also strike one paragraph and renumber others to simplify cross-references. If enacted, these edits would take effect upon enactment and would change which enrollment periods and which borrowers the loan-limit rules cover.
