Next Generation Nuclear Deployment Act
Sponsored By: Representative Moore, Tim [R-NC-14]
Introduced
Summary
This bill would expand the Department of Energy's advanced reactor demonstration program by prioritizing testing at at least 10 sites and explicitly including fourth‑generation reactors, small modular reactors (≤500 megawatts electric), and specialized micro‑reactors (≤10 megawatts).
Show full summary
- Advanced reactor developers would get a clearer path to demonstrations because the bill names prioritized design categories, including fourth‑generation types like sodium‑cooled fast reactors, high‑temperature gas‑cooled reactors, and molten salt reactors.
- Private industry and research institutions would be expected to share costs because the Secretary of Energy must seek cost‑sharing arrangements to support testing and development.
- Demonstrations could occur on any site, including privately owned or non‑DOE sites, and at least one of the prioritized sites must host a specialized micro‑reactor aimed at remote or specialized uses.

More testing for advanced nuclear reactors
If enacted, this bill would require the Department of Energy to prioritize testing advanced nuclear reactor designs at at least 10 different sites. At least one site would host a specialized micro-reactor that can produce up to 10 megawatts for remote or special uses. Priority reactor types would include fourth-generation designs (sodium-cooled fast, high-temperature gas-cooled, and molten salt), small modular or factory-built reactors up to 500 megawatts, and the specialized micro-reactor. The bill would let DOE test reactors on any site, even if DOE does not own it, and would direct the Secretary to seek cost-sharing agreements with private companies and research institutions.
