Limits on local immigration enforcement

This bill would amend 8 U.S.C. 1357(g) to limit who can check or act on immigration status. Only immigration officers and DHS-authorized employees would be able to inquire about or verify immigration or citizenship status, and to investigate, arrest, or detain someone for immigration violations. State and local officials would generally no longer have that authority, except for three named statutory exceptions (paragraph (10) of section 103(a); section 274(c); and section 439 of the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (8 U.S.C. 1252c)). If you are an immigrant or noncitizen, this would reduce the chance that state or local officials detain you for immigration reasons.
