New clean-power rules for large data centers

This bill would require covered data centers to generate all the electricity they use each year. A "data center" would be a facility described in the Energy Independence and Security Act that uses at least 50 megawatts per day. Starting January 1, 2035, at least 75 percent of that self-generated power would have to come from clean sources; beginning January 1, 2040, 100 percent would have to be from clean sources. Clean sources listed include solar, wind, battery, green hydrogen, hydropower, and geothermal. The bill would allow fines up to $100,000 per day for violations until the violation is fixed, and it would require the Secretary of Energy to set an administrative fines process within 30 days of enactment.
