Greenland Sovereignty Protection Act

Sponsored By: Representative Gomez, Jimmy [D-CA-34]

Introduced

Summary

prevents U.S. acquisition or increased influence over Greenland. This bill would bar federal funds for any activity that aims to acquire Greenland, for increasing the U.S. Armed Forces presence or U.S. funding or investment in Greenland above the levels in place the day before enactment, and for staging public or covert influence campaigns to sway Greenlanders' self-determination; any waiver would require a new law that explicitly cites this act.

  • Greenlanders: Would be shielded from U.S.-funded influence campaigns and from actions toward annexation, purchase, or other forms of acquisition.
  • U.S. military and federal agencies: Would be prohibited from increasing troop presence, funding, assistance, or investment in Greenland beyond the pre-enactment baseline.
  • Congress and policymakers: Could only allow exceptions by passing a new statute that explicitly names and waives this law.

Limits on U.S. actions in Greenland

This bill would bar federal money for any activity that helps the United States invade, annex, buy, or otherwise acquire Greenland. It would stop any increase in U.S. Armed Forces presence, funding, assistance, or financial investment in Greenland above the levels (adjusted for inflation) that existed the day before enactment. It would also bar federal programs or projects that run public or covert influence campaigns to sway the self-determination of the people of Greenland. The bill would let the bans be waived only if Congress later passes a law that specifically names and cites this Act and explicitly authorizes the activity.
