Show full summary
- Families and students would get stronger evidence when drivers illegally pass stopped school buses because the bill would promote camera use and publish study findings and best practices that aim to promote student safety.
- State educational agencies and school districts would be eligible for grants to buy buses with cameras, retrofit existing buses, and pay for installation, maintenance, and repairs. The Secretary of Transportation must set up the grant program within 18 months and notify State educational agencies before accepting applications.
- Federal coordination and data rules would be required. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would publish a study within 1 year that includes recommendations on data management, privacy safeguards, lawful data sharing with law enforcement for fair adjudication, and fee and revenue sharing to help programs be financially self-sustaining.

More stop-arm cameras on school buses
This bill would require two federal safety agencies to study the benefits of stop-arm cameras and publish findings within 1 year of enactment. The study would include recommendations on data management, privacy safeguards, sharing camera data with law enforcement, and fee or revenue-sharing to help pay for programs. The Secretary of Transportation would be required to set up a grant program within 18 months so State educational agencies (as defined in 20 U.S.C. 7801) would be eligible to apply. Grants would pay to buy buses with cameras, add cameras to buses already owned, and install, maintain, and repair the equipment. The bill does not name how much money would be available.
