States may get cash to buy food
This bill would allow an eligible State to elect to receive all of that State's entitlement funds as cash so the State would buy commodities in the private commercial marketplace. The bill would define "entitlement funds" as the dollar amount the Secretary uses to purchase commodities under 7 U.S.C. 2036 to distribute to the State under section 214. Only States that meet the "eligible State" definition in 7 U.S.C. 7518(b) would be able to choose this option. Households who get emergency food would see changes in what foods are available or when they are distributed in some places.
