Sponsored By: Representative Cole, Tom [R-OK-4]
Introduced
Summary
Explicitly extends federal enforcement and protection authorities to Indian Tribes and Tribal law. This bill would amend U.S. Marshals Service authorities and the Presidential Threat Protection Act so Tribal matters and Tribal law are treated alongside Federal and State matters when an Indian Tribe requests it.
Show full summary
- Tribes: Would let an Indian Tribe request U.S. Marshals help with tribal fugitive matters. That gives tribes a clearer route to federal assistance.
- U.S. Marshals: Would insert "Tribal" into the Marshals' authorities to explicitly include tribal matters. That clarifies when Marshals can respond to tribal requests.
- Threat protection: Would add "Indian Tribes" to the Presidential Threat Protection Act and change references from "Federal or State law" to "Federal, State, or Tribal law." That means the Act's protections and authorities would explicitly cover Tribal law and tribal components.

More federal support for Tribal law
If enacted, this would let the U.S. Marshals Service help with Tribal fugitive cases when an Indian Tribe asks. It would add the word "Tribal" alongside local authorities so Marshals can work with Tribal law enforcement. It would also add Indian Tribes to who the Presidential Threat Protection Act covers and make that law apply to Tribal law as well as Federal and State law. These changes would take effect upon enactment.
