New tax deduction for renters

This bill would let you deduct one‑twelfth of the rent you paid to lease and occupy your main home during the year. The deduction would be capped at $4,000 per individual and would not be allowed if your adjusted gross income is above the limit for your filing status: $125,000 joint returns, $85,000 married filing separately, $80,000 head of household, and $75,000 single. The deduction would be available whether or not you itemize and would not be treated as a miscellaneous itemized deduction. The changes would apply to taxable years beginning after December 31, 2026, and the $4,000 cap and income limits would be increased for inflation for tax years after 2027, with increases rounded to the nearest $100.
