New criminal ban on approaching immigration officers
If enacted, this bill would make it a federal crime to ignore a verbal warning not to approach from a federal immigration enforcement officer. The warning must come from someone you knew or reasonably should have known was a U.S. officer doing a lawful immigration-enforcement duty. After that warning, knowingly approaching or staying within 25 feet with the intent to impede the officer, threaten physical harm, or harass them would be prohibited. The bill defines "harass" as knowingly engaging in conduct that intentionally causes substantial emotional distress and serves no legitimate purpose. Penalties would include a fine, up to 5 years in prison, or both. It would take effect upon enactment.
