Grants to colleges for makerspaces

This bill would direct the National Science Foundation to award competitive grants to colleges and college consortia for makerspaces. Grants would pay for research on how makerspaces teach STEM, for equipment, and for sharing best practices. NSF could give technical help to applicants and grant recipients. Grants generally could not pay to build new buildings, unless the NSF Director says construction is needed for safety or special equipment. The bill would define "makerspace" and list allowable workforce partners, and it would point to existing law for HBCUs, minority-serving institutions, rural areas, and STEM.
