Introduced
Summary
Withholds Members of Congress' pay for days a government shutdown lasts. This bill would require House and Senate payroll administrators to reduce a Member's pay for a pay period by one day's pay for each 24-hour period of a shutdown that falls in that pay period. The Treasury Secretary must provide assistance to help carry out the payroll adjustments. The rule would apply to the 120th Congress and each succeeding Congress and defines a shutdown as a lapse in appropriations for any federal agency or department.

Members of Congress lose pay
This bill would stop pay for Members of Congress for each 24-hour government shutdown day in a pay period. The payroll office would subtract one day's pay, calculated from the Member's annual rate, times the number of shutdown days that fall in the pay period. A "government shutdown" would mean a lapse in funding for any federal agency because Congress did not pass a regular appropriations bill or continuing resolution. It would apply starting in the One Hundred Twentieth Congress and each Congress after. House and Senate payroll officials would carry out the pay cuts and the Treasury would provide assistance.
