Fred Korematsu Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2025

Sponsored By: Representative Takano, Mark [D-CA-39]

Introduced

Summary

This bill would authorize a posthumous Congressional Gold Medal to Fred Korematsu honoring his civil rights leadership and legal challenge to wartime exclusion. It would direct the Secretary of the Treasury to strike the gold medal, give the medal to the Smithsonian Institution for display and research with preference for Smithsonian‑affiliated venues like the National Portrait Gallery, and treat the medals as national and numismatic items under federal law. The Secretary could sell bronze duplicates at a price sufficient to cover costs, and the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund would pay minting costs and receive proceeds from duplicate sales.
