Introduced

- Residents near contaminated sites would have cleanup plans explicitly evaluated for resilience to floods, storms, wildfires, and other extreme events that climate change may worsen.
- Federal remedial decisionmakers would have to include climate hazard analysis when selecting remedies and when conducting periodic reviews of whether those remedies still protect health and the environment.
- CERCLA Section 121 would gain a new statutory consideration and a required protectiveness assessment focused on current and projected extreme weather and disaster risks.

Climate risk in Superfund cleanups
If enacted, decisionmakers selecting Superfund cleanups would have to consider local natural disasters and extreme weather. They would also have to consider how climate change might make those hazards worse. The President's remedial review would have to assess whether a chosen cleanup still protects people and the environment given those hazards. Nearby communities could get more climate-resilient cleanup plans, while site owners and responsible parties could face changed designs or extra cleanup work.
