Clean Slate through Rehabilitation Act
Sponsored By: Representative Williams, Nikema [D-GA-5]
Introduced
Summary
Removes adverse loan information from certain borrowers' credit reports to help rehabilitation. The Clean Slate through Rehabilitation Act would amend the Higher Education Act to expand the existing cleanup rule so that any adverse information related to the loan described in section 428F(a)(1)(C) could be removed, not just a record of default. That change could improve credit reports and access to credit for rehabilitated borrowers. The bill focuses only on the credit reporting standard and does not create new funding or programs.

More credit cleanup for student borrowers
If enacted, you would be able to have more negative information tied to your federal student loan removed from your credit report. The bill would change the phrase "remove the record of the default" to "remove any adverse information relating to such loan." This change would apply only to the loan described in 20 U.S.C. 1078-6(a)(1)(C). The bill does not set a start date or provide new funding. That would improve your credit report and make it easier to borrow.
