No Free Passes for Cronies Act

Sponsored By: Representative Scanlon, Mary Gay [D-PA-5]

Introduced

Summary

Stops courts from dismissing criminal cases mid-trial without defendants' consent. The No Free Passes for Cronies Act would amend Rule 48(a) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure so that when the government moves to dismiss an indictment, information, or complaint the court may grant or deny that motion in the interests of justice. The court could not grant a dismissal during trial unless the defendant agrees, limiting judges' ability to end a trial over a defendant's objection.
